Situation in the Red Sea – implications for maritime transport

Last weekend, the situation escalated off the coast of Yemen, when rebels launched new attacks against cargo ships. Several shipping companies have announced that they will suspend operations through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal for security reasons.

Cargo ships traveling between Europe and Asia primarily use the Red Sea route and the Suez Canal. Choosing an alternative route, which goes around the whole Africa, extends transport times and increases costs. Congestion is also expected in European ports, which will likely affect feeder services.

The prolongation of the situation would have significant effects on costs, transport times, and ship capacity.
